Abercrombie & Kent, an operator of African safaris since the 1960s, is trying something it has never done; offering co-branded self-drive packages in which clients drive themselves in Land Rovers. The programs give customers an opportunity to do their own driving in a Land Rover in the wilderness, and there are trainers from Land Rover, called Land Rover Experience instructors, to coach them how to drive the all-terrain vehicles.

Called Land Rover Adventure Travel by Abercrombie & Kent, the programs are offered through a partnership between Abercrombie & Kent and Jaguar Land Rover North America. They are available in a number of destinations, including Botswana, Great Britain, Morocco, Namibia, Tanzania and Australia.

The itineraries are organized by A&K and safari drives are accompanied by wilderness guides as well as Land Rover trainers. Accommodations are luxurious.

Seven programs are offered at the launch of the series:
  • Big Five in Botswana, explores the country’s national parks and the Okavango Delta.
  • Best of British drives through the English countryside from London to Eastnor Castle,
  • Morocco: Atlas and Atlantic visits Marrakesh and travels into the Agalay Desert to the Atlas Mountains.
  • Bonnie Scotland drives across the country on private estates and visits Edinburgh Castle.
  • Tanzania Into the Wild observes the the Great Migration and the wildlife of the Serengeti.

Departures in September and October 2015:

  • Namibia: Sossusvlei and Safari travels through the sands of Sossusvlei and tracks rhinos across Damaraland.
  • Australia:  Alice to Uluru explores Finke Gorge National Park and the ancient rock art at Uluru.

The Land Rover Adventure Travel by Abercrombie & Kent programs begin at $8,650 per person double occupancy, including meals, accommodations and a range of experiences. Departures start in May.
